New gTLD WatchList Lets Users Track, Choose and Pre-Register Hundreds of New Domain Extensions
Ahead of ICANN's anticipated release of hundreds of new global top level domains (gTLDs) starting this year, leading ICANN-accredited domain registrar DomainPeople today announced the launch of its new gTLD WatchList, the first online portal that lets users track and even pre-register new gTLDs as they are released by ICANN.
"The introduction of new gTLDs represents an important milestone in the evolution of the Internet,” said Chris Kruk, DomainPeople's product manager. "By providing greater selection and meaningful association with brands, products and services, new gTLDs will support new and innovative uses of the Internet around the world,”
But, with the multitude of new gTLDs becoming available, joining the .com, .net, .org, .info and others already in use, competition will likely be fierce among businesses, industry groups, service providers and even individuals looking to lock down new domains to establish, protect or expand their online presence.
With DomainPeople's free, user-friendly gTLD WatchList, registered users can gain a competitive advantage in being among the first to register these new domains. WatchList users can select gTLD categories and specific gTLDs of interest to track their progress and opt to receive automatic email alerts about new developments, including the final launch, of each new gTLD in ICANN's global domain registration system. The convenient tool sends email updates on release progress, uses and valuation of specific gTLDs.
WatchList will also enable users to participate in pre-launch phases, including SunRise for trademark holders, LandRush for registration of premium domains and Pre-Registration, giving users the opportunity to queue their registration order for processing the instant a new gTLD is released.
"The quality of available domains relative to specific TLDs will be astounding, and our customers will have the ability to register meaningful and memorable domains with extensions that truly represent their business, industry or interests, such as .ltd, .corp, .homes, .mls, .music, .blog, .shop, .web, .hotel, .yoga and hundreds more,” Kruk said. "WatchList highlights the value and opportunities each new gTLD offers, assisting users in identifying which gTLDs make sense for them to use.”
ICANN announced the initiative to create new domain name extensions in 2011 in an effort to offer more choices for descriptive and memorable web addresses for businesses and consumers. By June 2012, ICANN had received nearly 2,000 applications for new gTLDs from businesses, governments and community groups worldwide, and began processing those applications. ICANN is expected to issue the first group of new gTLDs in the 2nd quarter of this year allowing registries to ramp up and make their new gTLDs available for registration.
