Beware of Dead-End Pages

In web lingo, dead ends are pages that don’t include links to other pages. Your visitor reaches this type of page and wonders, “Where should I go next?” (The most common answer: Off your site.)

But the bigger problem with these pages is that, not only are they dead ends for your visitors, they’re also dead ends for web spiders, which crawl and index your site by following the chain of links from one page to another.

Most common pitfall: 404 Error pages, which often do not include your template sidebars, footers or banners or any other links.

Solution:

  • Make sure every page links to at least one other page on your site.
  • Add a link to a relevant page or a call to action leading to a sales page.
  • Take the time to optimize your 404 Error pages by adding a link back to your homepage.
